The city of Genoa has 600,000 inhabitants. Its modern port is one of the most important of the Mediterranean Sea being itself a strategic logistic basis for the maritime trade. During 2004, it was appointed as European Capital of Culture, ere inscribed on the World Heritage List (UNESCO). Genoa, squeezed between mountains and coast, stretches along the coast for about 30km and for 10km inland between the Liguria Sea and the Apennine Mountains covering an area of 243 square km, of which 73 urbanized. Every day about 60.000 commuters reach Genoa, 290.000 cars and more than 130.000 motorbikes and motorcycles are registered in Genoa and circulate on the road network, which extends on 1.400 km. Four main highways cross the city, connecting it with the main northern and central Italy cities and with France borders; their 7 highway tollbooths inside Genoa territory are used everyday by about 220.000 vehicles entering and leaving the town. The modal share is: almost 45% public transport (much higher percentage in the central areas), 40% private transport (of which 71% cars, 25% two-wheels, 4% other); about 15% walking.The Municipality of Genoa has also adopted the Sustainable Energy Action Plan, in accordance with the Covenant of Mayors initiative of the European Commission.
