The Municipality is the Administration in charge of all transport and tourism issues in the City with full responsibility on them, including information management, operation, maintenance, control, etc. The city of Madrid has implemented a lot of transport and traffic services as well as tourism information for users within and outside EU initiatives and has a complete technical infrastructure to provide advanced services for different kind of users (managers, operators, end users, etc.).
The city of Madrid is an agglomeration with 4 million inhabitants in the city centre and almost 7 million, if the outskirts population and floating visitors are taken into account. Transport statistics show that 1/3 of the car journeys take place between the city centre and peripheral areas whereas 2/3 takes place between peripheral areas. Overall, 1 million cars enter the city centre everyday creating congestion problems.
